Ok, I’ll take you on this one GEO hype vs what actually moves needle! So what is the most dangerous GEO advice? And what does move the needle (and the average timeframe when you can expect measurable advice, provided you do things properly). Thanks for doing this!

Thank you! The most dangerous GEO advice is "publish more listicles" or "do programmatic SEO at scale" Most of the people are just using same prompts or rules for it with cheap models. It. Won't. Work.

I tried this in an experiment and my website literally tanked by Google. Website is still performing well on ChatGPT but what about others? If my audience lives in only ChatGPT, it's okay for me. Otherwise...

What does move the needle? This is a great question.

I'm trying to predict what users are really asking, then start tracking and analyze query fanouts. I am pretty sure this is the most underrated gem in AI visibility.

Specific use case: Many brands publish lists for ChatGPT visibility, and these lists do perform well. However, they prioritize themselves first, followed by other players in the industry(not the industry leading competitors). But in fanout patterns, if there are large players involved, it means you'll likely lose during the retrieval phase because you don't have the coverage that addresses the fanout.

我經營 WordPress 科技部落格,在測試 JetGEO(每篇文章同時提供 Markdown 版本並產生 llms.txt)。

Hi Metehan,

I run a WordPress tech blog, and I'm testing JetGEO by Crocoblock. It serves every post as Markdown in addition to HTML (post URL + .md) and generates an llms.txt.

Two questions:

Have you seen any evidence that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode actually fetch or prefer .md versions or llms.txt when picking sources? Or is it mostly hype right now?

I want to avoid duplicate indexing between the HTML and the .md version. JetGEO currently sends no canonical or X-Robots-Tag header on the .md responses. Crocoblock support is aware of the issue and has passed it to their developers. Until it's fixed, what would you recommend: a canonical Link header pointing to the HTML, or X-Robots-Tag: noindex on the .md responses only (the HTML stays indexed)? Would a noindex tag hurt the chances of the Markdown being used by AI engines?

Thanks!

I didn't see this pattern. llms.txt is useful for agents, not for AI visibility. If you read anything around AI visibility, just run.

This is a unique configuration. I believe Google can understand and parse everything that you're doing right now but for ChatGPT and others? It's not even canonical tags aware. So, we still have time to see/track progress with OpenAI. However OpenAI is able to parse your all <head> tags (100% sure about it, I have proof) but I don't know if they respect for noindex tag(if they aware of noindex tag, probably they respect it). OpenAI also checks robots.txt.

OpenAI 也會檢查 robots.txt。

Thanks for asking! Great question.

There is technique named "query decomposition" and LLMs are using it. We never seen fanouts in AI Mode & AI Overviews so we're partially Google agnostic on this topic (It's possible to see them in Gemini)

有一種技術叫「query decomposition(查詢分解)」,LLM 都在用。

Query decomposition source: https://haystack.deepset.ai/blog/query-decomposition

2) It's most likely seems "hybrid approach" What I mean here is LLMs are trying to understand the "intent" first. If it's addressing a shopping intent, switches to shopping retrieval path instantly or maps/local or academic research or medical queries. Or just web.

3) For web retrieval, they are using a tiny model for creating sub-queries/fanouts for the prompt (it's cheaper on computing side) if they trained a different model. Otherwise, if the model is intelligent enough, it's also able to create fanouts and make live searches. The important point is here that the model that you use and context size. For example; ChatGPT has 3 options; Instant, Medium and High. Each selection will you bring different retrieval pool. High will bring you more citations and better context.

4) Why it matters? Google is doing this for over two decades, so it's all fine. But if your goal is building the AGI world, you need to understand what user is asking for and find the most relevant documents online. So, that's why query fanout matters more. Semantics, understanding, computing.

I've done a lot of research on this, and I'm still doing it. Yes, many different companies have many different models. There's competition in terms of intelligence. The model's own knowledge is very important here.

If we look at ChatGPT, the prompt first creates fanouts, and it doesn't do this all at once; the model makes a decision in under a second and performs a multiple fetch. With ChatGPT 5.6, we see that brands are more often in fanouts, and I believe parametric memory is important here. I don't have 100% certain information because I don't know the training systems; it's a commercial product and a secret.

I've done a lot of research on Common Crawl sets. I work at Peec, and when I examined Common Crawl's scan sets and analyzed Harmonic Centrality and PageRank by sector, the leaderboards I saw for AI visibility were similar.

Thank you so much for doing it! I have a quite basic question. In many studies, I see "being cited" vs. "being retrieved" comparisons. How do you track that? I know Gemini returns a "retrieved" list via API (unless I am mistaken). Do other LLMs do that as well?

Do you guys store insights like these? And can we get access to that through Peec dashboards? :)

It's easy to track in Peec dashboard, almost every tool also provides this. Being cited matters more of course :) I always check retrieval performance first, it's the first step. Then start analyzing top cited URLs, update your page.

Being retrieved mean AI has fetched your page and considered it for an answer, after retrieval, the AI assistant can decide whether it's worth citing you as a source or a recommendation or not. During search AI can fetch dozens of pages but only cite a few.

The only way to track whether your pages are being retrieved is by intercepting requests at the CDN level or a server side before the pages are rendered ( assuming there is no page caching ). This would tell you how many times AI have considered you for an answer. However, things are changing. ChatGPT for example just started using their own index as a source, so they save an internal copy of your page and use it for their answers, which means, it's now harder to know whether you've been retrieved/considered or not. Yet, you can still track referrals in the same place to know how many people these AI assistants are sending with high accuracy.

Yes, I understand retrieval vs citing. My question was how third-party studies that don’t necessarily have access to the server can detect retrieval

u/SurfacedBy其他網友回覆

Without access to the website's server or CDN logs, I don't think a third party can reliably detect retrieval.

If you control the site, you can identify live fetches from AI crawlers through server/CDN logs using user agents, IP verification, bot detection, etc. CDN-level logging is usually the cleanest place to observe those requests.

But even that doesn't give you a complete picture anymore, because an AI search engine may use a previously crawled/indexed copy of the page instead of fetching it again for every query. So you can track observable fetches pretty accurately, but you can't necessarily prove every time a page was internally retrieved or considered.

Besides that, there are platforms like Ahrefs and Semrush that show organic SEO traffic. These also use various prediction and modeling methods.

We also have a resource on prompt volume at Peec AI: https://docs.peec.ai/metrics/prompt-metrics/prompt-volume, but we use it as a demand score instead of monthly volumes. I believe this is the most reliable approach. Because as a user, I can ask my question in hundreds of different ways. For a very long time, we've believed in the effectiveness of long-tail keywords in the SEO world, and I've achieved success in that direction. Because the competition is brutal in GEO/SEO. It's technically impossible to see a structure for this right now. Also, the main searches are on the fanout side, and they aren't deterministic. Even for the same prompt, fanouts change.

Ultimately, what matters is having the platform that allows you to follow the right questions that will drive that transformation. At GEO Research Team, we pay close attention to this on the product side and constantly strive to support our product team.

1. What's your recommended workflow for tracking true "success" of a GEO program with real data?

All claims by third party AI visibility tracking vendors surrounding prompt research and volumes scream BS. I would love to hear your thoughts on

2. what's the best form of data that can be trusted to make decisions - fan out queries, volumes, the good old GSC, adwords, clickstreamdata?

3. Do you recommend dataforseo for personal projects?

I believe you can create any story while reporting by choosing a set of prompts that will help you build THAT story so a lot of SEO teams that I work with are living in a delusional bubble of "success" (tracking citation share, mention share) which is far from the reality of their industry.

The prompt trackers are notorious for predatory billing practices that will prevent you from getting the bigger picture, especially for large enterprise websites.

Good question.

1 & 2) I always start where my audience lives.

Let's assume, theoretically, that everyone uses Google search daily in 2026 (and they actually do).

But 15 years ago, everyone actively used Facebook, then Instagram came along, YouTube became more popular, and now there's TikTok. Various communities are more active on Telegram, etc.

I previously worked at a mobile app advertising company, and collecting Clickstream data and processing it accurately over a long period is a very laborious task. Ultimately, modeling and prediction will still come into play. The number of devices currently in use is also high; is data being collected from mobile devices or only desktops? That's why I believe providing a demand score, as we do, is better. But please don't interpret this as a promotion of PEEC. Let me explain the reason with a very clear example. When researching a non-English market, you must also be familiar with the structure of that country's language; therefore, the intensity of native searches is naturally at its peak. This is the biggest advantage of our research team. We know the American market very well; we can see what works, and similarly, we know non-English markets very well. But ChatGPT still searches using English fanouts. This raises questions in my mind regarding clickstream data. If the data is very robust, there's no problem, but since this is a trade secret for platforms, we naturally won't get a transparent answer. https://www.searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-search-often-switches-to-english-in-fan-out-queries-report/567811/ We mostly examine US data, but the situation is very different in non-English markets. Therefore, we come back to the same point: demand. https://docs.peec.ai/metrics/prompt-metrics/prompt-volume

https://docs.peec.ai/metrics/prompt-metrics/prompt-volume

Along with this, I am also in favor of generating prompts that correctly address the funnel and tracking them. As a research team, we are constantly thinking about this and working on what we can present and model more accurately on the demand side, and our product team is working in the same way. (I'm not against using prompt volume.) Here, the focus should be on the quality of prompts generated when first setting up a project. An AI search/SEO expert can understand this when reviewing the dashboard, and we are trying to provide and improve this.

GSC is still not good; there is very little data. Bing WMT and Clarity are much better. I also check them weekly.

3) I have been using DataForSEO for a very long time and recommend its use. By the way, related to the first question: they have also been providing a modeling system for prompt volume for a very long time. https://dataforseo.com/help-center/what-is-ai-search-volume-in-dataforseo

Prompt tracking delusion: Sometimes it's better to think in reverse or from a manager's perspective. Even within Google, 3 different areas have emerged: AIO, AIM, and classic search. How do we report this, is it really possible to get an insight? Yes, it's possible through AI visibility dashboards.

What excites me in this field is parametric memory, how citations change according to the model, semantic links and grounding, the RAG world. In the 2024 Google algorithm leak, how many SEO experts, including myself, managed to get our websites to the top in less than a month? The answer is probably zero. But our work continued, the reports didn't stop. Being able to present concrete data is always important, and I think tools fundamentally fill this gap first.

Thanks for doing this. How do you see persona measurement evolving as answer engines get more personalized?

Right now it looks like most tools, Profound for example, add persona details to an otherwise clean prompt and session, and Peec handles personas through tagging. I thought Peec’s point about location injection was a good one, that adding a location to a prompt can produce answers real local users never see. I’ve wondered whether persona injection runs into the same thing.

With memory, past activity, and signed-in context shaping answers more over time, do you thinking trackers will eventually build up context the way a real user’s develops, tracked by market and persona over time? Or is personalization still too weak or inconsistent to change which sources get picked?

Have you seen a data comparing sources or citations between clean sessions and with memory or history in the mix? I’d guess platform terms and the difficulty of automating signed-in accounts make this hard to do right now.

Hi, Metehan! Nice to e-meet you!

ChatGPT has genuinely pulled away from Reddit as a source when building answers lately, but some ppl say Reddit content still shows up in the answers anyway, even without a "source" label. What do you think about that? Is it true, or just speculation?

I'm also curious whether you think Reddit citations will come back to ChatGPT.

Thanks!

Hi Metehan.

Really interesting work. I’ve been looking at a similar problem from the developer documentation side. I used Mintlify on a project and it got me thinking about how differently AI systems discover and consume technical docs compared with human visitors. Mintlify generates things like llms.txt and llms-full.txt, gives individual pages Markdown versions, and can expose docs through MCP. Those all make sense as ways of giving agents cleaner access to the underlying information, but I’m curious how much any of that matters at the search/citation layer you’re studying. Have you seen evidence that ChatGPT or other AI search systems actually use things like llms.txt when deciding what to retrieve or cite? And do clean Markdown endpoints or other machine-readable versions of a page make any measurable difference compared with having the same information available through normal HTML? I’m basically wondering whether teams should actively optimize the way their docs are exposed to agents, or whether the bigger factor is still the content and authority of the regular web pages. Would be really interested to hear what you’ve actually seen in the data.

I found it while brainstorming. I ended up using Mintlify on a project where the docs were in Git, and what interested me was less the site builder itself and more what happened around the docs as I could keep the normal Git workflow, while its automations helped flag docs that might need updating as things changed. The other thing that got me curious was the agent side. It exposes things like llms.txt, Markdown versions of pages and an MCP endpoint. That’s why I am interested in what Metehan will say. I can make docs easier for agents to access, but I’d like to know whether any of that actually changes how AI search systems retrieve or cite them.

Hi, Metehan! Good to see you in this space :)

Our question is related to 'why ChatGPT reads a page but doesn't cite it', so yeah pretty basic.

As far as we know, that's definitely not an awareness problem, because AI engine keeps checking out the site and still decides that the content is not relevant to cite.

So, what we're supposed to do to make that association or relevance clear?

Is it following the classic, mundane, prolonged process of being discussed, written about, compared across the Search to make that connection visible in the training data or during retrieval? Or there can be some other way too, to make that happen?

From all the research on GEO I've come across, it seems that you have to be a fairly established brand before you get mentioned by AI engines. Since mentions will most likely be a thing for mainly commercial intent queries, is there any way a small brand or startup can at least start getting little conversions with their low visibility from GEO?

The “Segment of One”: Modern AI uses “dynamic profiles” that update in real-time based on the user’s browsing behavior, scroll depth, and possibly even device type. This makes a single “rank” or “mention score” for a brand technically impossible to standardize. This is not like SEO or ranking in Google where there is actually a database to draw from. The difference between measuring AI visibility and Google rankings could not be further apart.

So how do you overcome this obstacle?

Synthetic Data Problem: Tools like Semrush and Nightwatch mostly rely on synthetic queries. These are automated bots asking a fixed set of questions via API. These bots do not have the user’s context, history, hobbies, or professional, which is why their “visibility scores” mostly differ from what real users see.

How do you overcome that?

The “Transparency” Gap: OpenAI, Google, Anthropic & Perplexity AI do not provide analytics APIs for brand mentions.

So is the following statement true or false?

Until they do provide that access to raw data, any tool claiming to “track” mentions is effectively using “directional surveillance” or simulations rather than hard data.

I closely follow your work in the fields of AI, SEO, and GEO, and I truly appreciate it. I hope you achieve even greater successes in the future.

You highlight technical SEO efforts as the most important factor (I believe) for GEO visibility. So, which areas require the most attention regarding technical SEO? If you were starting a new project, what would your order of priorities be? For instance, do LLM bots struggle to read and index content rendered via JavaScript—much like Googlebot does?

As a second question, you mentioned the following in a comment: "I'm trying to predict what users are really asking, then start tracking and analyze query fanouts. I am pretty sure this is the most underrated gem in AI visibility."
Do you use a custom logprobs tool for this prediction? How do you execute these steps?

Finally, I am curious about your perspective on SEO. I imagine there isn't a single website right now that isn't losing clicks and impressions due to AI Overviews; recent reports are dominated by red figures. How long do you think this trend will continue? Will the decline eventually stop? Or will clicks cease to be a KPI in the future of SEO?

Thank you very much in advance for your answers.
